THE INNER SPIRIT – 2

The Spirit of Man and the Spirit of God

The Spirit of Man and the Spirit of God
To live a victorious Christian life, you must understand the relationship between your spirit and God’s Spirit. Many believers desire victory, peace, and consistency, yet struggle because they misunderstand how God works within them. Victory in the Christian life does not begin with outward change; it begins with inward union.
Christianity is not God helping the flesh; it is God living inside man. This truth separates true Christianity from mere religion. Religion focuses on behaviour modification, external rules, and human effort. Christianity, however, is based on divine life—God Himself dwelling within the human spirit.
At salvation, something supernatural takes place. God does not simply forgive sins from a distance; He comes to live inside the believer. The Holy Spirit takes residence in the regenerated human spirit. This is not symbolic—it is a spiritual reality. Scripture teaches that the believer is joined to the Lord and becomes one spirit with Him (1 Corinthians 6:17).
This union means that the Christian life is not meant to be lived independently. Many believers try to live for God instead of living from God. They struggle to overcome sin, fear, and weakness by determination and discipline alone. But God never intended the flesh to be improved; He intended it to be surrendered.
The flesh represents human strength, self-effort, and natural ability. No matter how educated, disciplined, or sincere a person is, the flesh cannot please God. Scripture makes it clear that the flesh profits nothing (John 6:63). This is why God did not choose to assist the flesh—He chose to indwell the spirit.
When God lives inside a man, He supplies life, strength, wisdom, and direction from within. The Christian life becomes a life of dependence, not struggle. Victory flows from union, not effort. As Scripture declares, it is no longer merely “I,” but Christ living in the believer (Galatians 2:20).
Understanding this relationship transforms how a believer prays, obeys, and responds to challenges. Prayer is no longer an attempt to persuade a distant God, but fellowship with an indwelling Spirit. Obedience is no longer forced compliance, but a response to inward life. Strength is no longer self-generated, but divinely supplied.
The Holy Spirit does not bypass the human spirit; He works through it. Guidance, conviction, peace, and spiritual sensitivity flow through the inner spirit. This is why believers must learn to recognize the witness of God’s Spirit within them. Scripture affirms that the Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God (Romans 8:16).
A victorious Christian life is therefore lived from the inside out. The spirit, united with God’s Spirit, leads the soul, and the body follows. When this order is reversed—when the body or emotions lead—the believer experiences instability. But when the inner spirit governs, life becomes aligned and fruitful.
God’s intention has always been intimate union, not distant relationship. From creation to redemption, His desire has been to dwell with man. In Christ, this desire is fulfilled. God no longer lives in temples made with hands; He lives in the hearts of believers.
This understanding removes frustration from the Christian journey. The believer stops striving to become spiritual and starts yielding to the Spirit within. Growth then becomes natural, progressive, and sustainable.
Victory is not achieved by trying harder, but by trusting deeper. When a believer learns to live from the reality of God within, the Christian life becomes not a burden, but a testimony of divine life expressed through human vessels.
“The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God.”
— Romans 8:16
This verse reveals a deep truth:
God does not relate with us through our body
or our emotions first.
He relates with us through our spirit.

Two Spirits at Work
There are two spirits involved in the Christian life:

  1. The spirit of man
  2. The Spirit of God (the Holy Spirit)
The spirit of man is the inner receiver.
The Spirit of God is the divine source.
    Without the Holy Spirit,
    the human spirit cannot function
    as God intended.

The Indwelling of the Holy Spirit
When a person is born again,
the Holy Spirit comes to dwell inside them.
“Do you not know that your body is the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you…?”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19
God does not live in buildings made by hands alone.
He lives in people.
Your inner spirit becomes God’s dwelling place.
This means:
· You are never alone
· You carry God’s presence
· You have access to divine guidance

How the Holy Spirit Works Within
The Holy Spirit does not shout from heaven.
He speaks within your spirit.
He guides you through:
· Inner witness
· Peace or unrest
· Conviction
· Spiritual understanding
Many believers miss God’s voice
because they are looking outward
instead of listening inward.

Union, Not Struggle
Christianity is not a struggle
to reach God.
It is a union with God.
“But he who is joined to the Lord is one spirit with Him.”
— 1 Corinthians 6:17
This union means:
· God’s strength flows into your spirit
· God’s wisdom becomes accessible
· God’s nature begins to shape your life
You don’t work for power.
You work from power.

Why Many Believers Live Below Their Privilege
Many Christians live defeated
not because God is absent,
but because their inner spirit is ignored.
They feed the body,
they entertain the soul,
but starve the spirit.
What you feed grows.
What you neglect weakens.

Key Truth of This Chapter
The Holy Spirit does His work
through your inner spirit,
not around you.

Reflection Prayer
“Holy Spirit,
open my understanding
to Your presence within me.
